Cycling history as it pertains to women is a microcosm of women’s history overall, with the bicycle playing a large role in both fashion and freedom. The much maligned “bicycle smile”, the shocking move to bloomers, the “detriment to organs of matrimonial necessity” and the wild women who risked it all by riding sidesaddle in corsets and clothing that weighed more than their bikes – these were the original pioneers of women’s cycling. Fast forward to the 80’s when Georgena Terry picked up the (brazing) torch and, well, the rest is history.
